5 Lessons From Jim Rohn On How To Achieve Anything You Want

“If you really want to do something, you’ll find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse”- Jim Rohn.

Jim Rohn was America’s foremost business philosopher. Widely recognised as a personal development legend, Jim Rohn possessed the unique ability to bring extraordinary insights to ordinary principles and events. Whilst he passed away many years ago, his success philosophies and influence continue to have worldwide impact.

As someone who dedicates a significant portion of their time to personal development, it’s no surprise that Jim Rohn’s philosophies and principles are something which have shaped and influenced my mindset and behaviour. In this blog article, I am going to share with you some of Jim Rohn’s principles which I have adopted in order to achieve what I want.

You may be wondering, why is it important to understand certain principles rather than just coast through life, wishing and hoping for the best? Well, as Jim Rohn has pointed out, many talented people have gone unnoticed and settled for a life much less than the one they are capable of living. This is because they have not taken the time to invest, motivate or make the necessary changes to bring their talent into the universe.

In order to achieve goals and obtain what you want in life, there are certain characteristics you must possess:

1. PURPOSE

In order to achieve what you want in life, you need to have purpose. Without purpose, we can become lost, demotivated and depressed. Studies have shown that when people are contributing to a higher purpose, they are likely to have a healthier outlook on life and increase resilience to stress.

Purpose has to be something that does something to us. It pulls us through all kinds of challenges and obstacles. It drives us towards the future and gives us something that is beyond today, next week, next month or next year.

2. SELF-CONFIDENCE

Self-confidence comes from not neglecting the small, daily disciplines. It comes from feeling good about yourself and knowing at the end of the day that you did your best. At the end of those days, you feel good about yourself. And when you feel good about yourself, self-confidence begins to rise.

Self-confidence also develops from the willingness to do whatever it takes to achieve. It allows you to rise above your circumstances and encourages you to keep going. Discouraging things may cause others to quit however when you have purpose and self-confidence, you become empowered to persist.

3. PREPARATION

“By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”-Benjamin Franklin.

Preparation is the process of getting ready. It takes time to prepare and sometimes it seems like a long, excruciating process. However, by taking time to prepare for a meeting, interview or presentation means that you are serious about it. Prepare yourself for success and ask “What can I do to make myself ready?”

Prepare yourself for opportunity, challenges and for good fortune. The more prepared you are, the more value you will derive.

4. SELF-RELIANCE

Self-reliance means that you look mostly to yourself and the buck begins and ends with you. You need to primarily say “I’m the person responsible” and be the final one that others can rely on. What others may have missed, you are there to fill in.

With self-reliance comes self-discipline.  Take ownership and accountability for daily disciplines. Have the discipline to do the best job you possibly can.

5. EXTRAORDINARY PERFORMANCE

“To be successful you don’t need to do extraordinary things. You just need to do ordinary things extraordinarily well.’- Jim Rohn.

Demand excellent results from yourself. Society does not demand extraordinary result from you- it’s up to you to set high standards and ask that performance of yourself. Whatever your goals are or your work entails- do your job, and do it extraordinarily well.
