Personal Development Update: August 2020.
“Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. It will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.” – Robin Sharma.
2020 has certainly been an unusual, challenging and difficult period for many of us. Events, plans and celebrations have been put on hold, and there is still a lot of uncertainty in the air. One of the things I try to do as much as possible, is to focus on the things that are within my control, and to let go of what isn’t.
There are two things which I try my best to maintain, irrespective of chaos and disruption. The first is maintaining a solid and consistent morning routine. And the second, investing in my personal development.
I am a huge advocate of investing in myself. Whenever I have invested time, money and resources to work on my personal development, it has provided me with an ROI that is at least 10 times my initial investment.
I wanted to write this post to share some of the ways I’m currently investing in myself, including what I’m reading, watching, enrolling in and more.
1. WHAT I’M READING
I read at least one personal development book per month and am currently reading “I Will Teach You To Be Rich” by Ramit Sethi. Ramit is someone who’s content I have consumed for years, and his money mindset really resonates with me.
In his New York Times best-selling book, Ramit shares real, practical advice on how to get the most out of your finances. The book contains exact word-for-word scripts that you can use to negotiate everything. He also talks to spending money without the guilt and investment strategies.
2. WHAT I’M LISTENING TO
I am a big advocate of listening to podcasts, and listen to them when I’m in the car, going for a walk, getting ready in the mornings or doing housework.
One of the most impactful and insightful podcasts I listen to is The Tim Ferriss Show. In this podcast, Tim talks to World Class Performers from a wide range of fields (sports, business, arts etc.) to deconstruct the tools and tactics you can use. This includes favourite books, morning routines, exercise habits, time-management tricks and more.
Some of my favourite episodes can be found here.
3. WHAT I’M WATCHING
I have also signed up for and attended a number of virtual events including:
4. WHAT I’M WORKING ON
After releasing just 10 episodes, The Boss in Heels Podcast has been featured in Yahoo Finance, Business Insider and The Digital Journal as the #1 Podcast to guide you through COVID. To say this is an honour and come as a complete surprise, would be an understatement.
My podcast has become one of my favourite things to do. Like anything else, podcasting is a skill that has to be refined and developed over time. To help fast track this process, I have engaged a coach who specialises in power and presence to help me hone in on my craft. One hour with this coach is equivalent to an average person’s weekly income. It doesn’t come cheap, but it truly is worth every penny. I’m committed to making my podcast the best it can possibly be.
5. WHAT NEW SKILL I’M LEARNING
I’m really passionate about Interior Design and have often contemplated completing a professional course. Steve Cordony is one of my favourite stylists and when I saw he was opening up his home for an intimate masterclass, I knew this was something I couldn’t afford to miss.
In this masterclass, Steve will share his interior tips and tricks, and key design elements and principles to help you create and hone your own interior skills. Live styling demonstrations will take place throughout the day including ‘how to style an entire lounge room in 30 minutes’, and ‘how to present a decadent dinner table’ including floral artistry.
This masterclass is something that I am really excited about. I am looking forward to building my skills in this area and learning from one of the industry’s best.
What are some of the ways you are investing in your personal development? What are some of the courses, seminars or work you have been contemplating signing up for a while? I would love to hear your thoughts, please leave your comments below!
