Small Changes That Have Positively Impacted My Life.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle.
A lot has happened over these past few months – both globally and on a personal level. Despite all the change and disruption, I have learned to remain more calm and in control. I have learned that success is not necessarily found in some big, monumental event. However it is often the result of the small, incremental habits and decisions we make on a daily basis.
Having a solid and consistent routine is something which is really important to me. No matter how disruptive a given situation may be, having a series of predictable steps I follow each morning means that I am in a better headspace to tackle whatever challenges are thrown at me throughout the day. It also results in me taking a more proactive, rather than reactive approach to my day.
Aside from having a consistent morning and evening routine, there are a few practices and small changes I’ve put in place which have positively impacted my life:
1. BEING IN THE PRESENT MOMENT
Practicing mindfulness and learning to live more in the present moment, is something I have been consciously making an effort to do more of. I have spent a lot of time over the past 6-12 months investing and learning from some of the greatest spiritual and thought leaders of our time, in particular Eckhart Tolle and Dr. Joe Dispenza. Learning the importance and power of the present moment, has been life changing for me. I’ve learned to live less in the past and future, and more in the present moment.
This shift has enabled me to form deeper connections and have a greater sense of calm.
2. BREATHING & COLD WATER THERAPY
I recently discovered Wim Hof’s breathing techniques, and they have positively impacted my life. Practicing this breathing exercise first thing in the morning provides me with significantly more energy throughout the course of the day. His methods are also scientifically proven to detox your body, reduce stress levels, rebalance the nervous system and strengthen the immune system.
Wim Hof’s method also teaches the benefits of cold water therapy. I have recently started taking cold showers. The power of cold is proven to burn fat, boost the immune system, sleep better, reduce inflammation and enhance our mood.
Wim Hof’s breathing exercise takes just 10 minutes to complete, and I have shared the link with you here:
3. LISTENING TO MY INTUITION
Learning to listen to my voice, and not the voice of others, has been another big one for me. So often, we fall into the trap of fulfilling the expectations that other people have of us – work, friends, family, even people online. It is also easy to be swayed by the opinions of others.
I’ve been learning to trust my gut and to govern my life, career are relationships through instinct. If something doesn’t feel right intuitively, I’m not going to do it – it is as simple as that.
4. PASSION PROJECTS
We often get so busy in our lives, and rarely find time to invest doing the things we feel truly passionate about. I am genuinely passionate about the work that I do for Boss in Heels – it doesn’t feel like work to me. I’ve been having so much fun with my blog, interviewing guests for my podcast and coaching clients. I truly feel like this is the work I’m supposed to be doing.
Aside from Boss in Heels, one of my other great passions in life is interior design. I absolutely love creating beautiful spaces and styling interiors. I have been thinking about completing an interior design course for years now, and finally decided to start by booking Steve Cordony’s Interior Styling Masterclass. He is one of my favourite interior stylists and I am already excited about all the new skills I am going to learn.
Taking out time to do passion projects is something I have decided to do more of. It is so important to do the things that bring us joy.
I am a big believer in self-care, and in taking the necessary time out to destress and decompress. Now more than ever, it’s important we invest in our minds, bodies and our overall wellbeing. Some of the self-care practices I enjoy include walks in nature, pampering / beauty treatments such as massages, a facial, getting my hair or nails done, enjoying a coffee in the sunshine, reading a good book or watching a movie.
I take time out every day – even if it is just something small, to do something that is good for my soul. I am a better person for myself and the people around me when I look after myself first.
